How to study abroad: the complete guide

Studying abroad means a lot of procedures and paperwork: here is the order to follow, step by step.

Leaving to study abroad is not something you improvise. Between choosing the programme, the application file, the visa and the housing, a year of preparation is not too much. This guide takes each step in order, with the deadlines to respect.

1. Clarify your project

Before comparing universities, set the frame: what level are you aiming for, in which language, for how long, and on what budget? A well-defined project cuts the time spent searching considerably, and it is also what will make your motivation letter credible to institutions.

2. Choose the country and the institution

Cost of living, recognition of the diploma, tuition fees and the right to work while studying vary enormously from one country to another. Compare at least three destinations before deciding, and always check the institution’s accreditation.

3. Prepare the application file

  • Transcripts and diplomas, translated and sometimes certified
  • Language test (IELTS, TOEFL, TestDaF, DELE depending on the country)
  • Motivation letter and letters of recommendation
  • CV in the format expected by the host country

Allow two to three months to gather these documents. Language tests often need to be booked several weeks ahead.

4. The visa and the insurance

A student visa application can generally only be filed once admission has been granted. Plan for proof of funds, international health insurance and, in some countries, proof of accommodation. Processing takes from three weeks to three months.

5. Housing, budget and departure

University residence, shared flat or host family: each option has its merits. Book early in large cities. Also plan a settling-in budget (deposit, transport, first purchases) worth one to two months of living costs on site.

Each of these steps can be handled with you by an adviser: that is exactly what our support is for.
